Kim’s Mini Quilt
Hello,
I hope you’re safe and doing well!! The weather is certainly crazy right now, take care and know that the rest of us are thinking of and praying for you.
This lovely mini quilt was made by Kim. The pattern is called Sunshine on a Cloudy Day, by Lindsey Weight from Primrose Cottage.
When I custom quilt quilts like this, I was to create a variety of different textures that complement on another. There are lots of curves, yet in the gray fabrics I used an edge ruler, from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple , to quilt some straight lines which frame the star block very nicely. It is actually easy to quilt this exact design continuously all the way around the block. Staring at the middle left point of the block, I quilted the straight line from point to point, then came down the right side of the diamond shape lining up the edge of the ruler on the point of the block. Then back up the left side, doing the same thing. Then off to the next block. If I can custom quilt continuously, I do! The nice thing about starting where I did, the left center point, when I’m done with all the lines, then I can use three of my Circle2™ machine quilting circle rulers to quilt the curves in the star block. All continuously.
I used the 3”, 4”, and 6” Circle2™ rulers to quilt these orange peel petals, as well as the arc in the very center. It does take some practice to get used to using a few rulers at the same time. I keep all the rulers next to me resting on the quilt top. I use one at a time, stopping for a second between swapping out a ruler for another one. If it’s hard for you, or your machine continues to quilt when you slow down, you can always stop the machine or quilt as much as you can with one ruler. In order for it to be continuous however, I can’t completely quilt the four petals in the yellow that form a square, and still be able to quilt the center as well as the orange peels in the white. I have to swap out rulers and quilt the orange peels when I get to the point where it connects to the other designs. I do that whenever I custom quilt, no matter the design. When you plan out a block to custom quilt, try and make it continuous. Not only does it save a lot of time and thread, I think it also shows that the design interlocks, which can be pleasing to the eye.
I love all these curves and textures together. I used a natural white Omni thread from Superior Threads, and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.
I used my 9” Circle2™ ruler to quilt the arc curves and the 4” to quilt the petals in the center. I love how these arcs frame the whole quilt so nicely!! They aren’t too hard to quilt either. I do have an old video on my YouTube channel using different rulers to create an arc design in a square, and it also has the center petals. It’s a big square space, so I went slower to make sure that the curves all met up correctly. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/5MPIzU-fiE4
Here is my clear 3”/9” Circle2™ ruler (pictured above). This is another reason this set is so awesome…I have both circles in one ruler!! My Circle2™ sets come with 6 different rulers, ranging in size from 2”-13”. The ruler combinations are 2”/8”, 3”/9”, 4”/10”, 5”/11”, 6”/12”, 7”/13”. It’s great to have that many options in 6 rulers, verses having 12 different rulers. Plus, the design is so handy to hold and use.
