Heidi’s Lullaby Quilt
Loved custom quilting this darling quilt for Heidi’s new granddaughter, who was just born last week.
The pattern is called Lullaby by Vintage Spool. Go here: https://www.thevintagespool.com/product-page/lullaby
Heidi chose such darling fabrics…which fix perfectly with the vintage style of the pattern.
I quilted several different freemotion quilting designs, most of which I teach in my Quilting It Freemotion course that is available on my website. For more info on that head over to: https://www.quiltingit.com/quilting-it-freemotion-course
I started with swirls in the background behind the buggy, which I teach about in video 4 in my course. I thought the swirls would be perfect with the wheels on the buggy. If you look closely I quilted pinstripes in the buggy.
In the sashing around each block you’ll see ribbon candy quilted, which is a perfect way to fill up the space in sashing. I also quilted an x in the posts (squares) and then arched around the lines to create a sweet four pointed petal. If needed, you can use a ruler. I have an excellent set of Circle2 rulers in my shop. Go check them out. https://www.quiltingit.com/shop
I decided the rattle needed Overlapping Circles quilted behind it, which looks so cute with the shape of the rattle and the handle. Overlapping Circles is the 9th video in my Quilting It Freemotion course. I also quilted some 1/2” lines and pebbles in the rattle.
The darling rabbit needed some fur, which is when I like to quilt my freemotion Grass design, which is in video 8 of my course. The background Pebbles are one of the first few designs I suggest to learn when starting to Freemotion Quilt. I teach my favorite techniques for Pepples in video 3. Loops are covered in video 2, which is the first step to great Pebbles.
Stippling is the first design you should start with, which I did behind the onesie. Stippling is a classic design that still to this day I get requests for. Stippling is the 1st video in my course. Of course a cross hatched onesie is just adorable. I love mixing and matching textures in the quilting. The softness of the stippling contrasts well with the hard lines in the cross hatch.
Speaking of Loops, when I saw the laces on the booties I thought this was the perfect block for some micro loops that are quilted close together. I quilted a little extra detail in the laces and enhanced the booties by quilting around the shoe to make it pop, and finished it off with some 1/2” lines.
Because I already did the Grass quilting inside the rabbit, I didn’t want to repeat the same Grass texture in the bear, too. So I quilted it in the background instead. I enhanced the bear by quilting 1/2” lines inside him.
To add more interest to the pebbles I quilted swirls inside some of the pebbles, which creates a completely different look than just pebbles. I teach about adding Swirls to Pebbles in the Pebbles video which is video number 3 in my course. I quilted diagonal 1/2” lines and pebbles in the jumper.
I decided to quilt an overall feather behind the jammies so that the quilting in the border had a tie to the quilty texture. I added stippling to the jammies, which created a fun texture.
I decided to do a double pinstripe behind the blocks. Which I love!! I quilted all the lines in this quilt with Linda’s from The Quilted Pineapple Edge ruler. https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/ I also quilted around the blocks to help them pop!
I used the Cream Omni thread from Superior Threads, which blended beautifully. Go to: https://www.superiorthreads.com/omni-3004-cream/p/134-02-3004 If you use my non-affiliate code at checkout you’ll get 15% off. “ASTLEISHA”
I used Hobbs wool batting on this quilt which helped the quilting pop a little bit more.
Heidi drew scallops on the quilt where she planned to trim and bind, which is the best option. You don’t want to cut into quilting or it would start to unravel. I quilted my Swirly Feather, which I teach in video 6 of my course.
