Fall Client Quilts • 2019
Hi there!! It’s been awhile since I’ve shared client quilts. I hope you enjoy the variety of patterns and different quilting designs. Custom and edge to edge quilting. Enjoy!!
This first pillow is one of mine. I shared a picture of it on my last post about Laser Cut Quilts quilt market release, but I didn’t share all the details…just yet. I got the acorns cut by my friend Molly. I sent her some Flexi Fuse, my favorite interfacing to appliqué with and to machine quilt. It’s definitely the softest most flexible interfacing I’ve used, and machine quilted!!! Thanks, Molly, for cutting those for me. Molly has a great tutorial on her blog, for this Little Acorn pillow. Check it out here: https://mollykohler.com
When I first started making quilts in 2002, we thought our interfacing needed to be the heavy duty kind. Well, as you can imagine, my fingers got tired of hand stitching through all that thickness. I was using my great grandmothers machine at the time, that only has a straight stitch. So I had to do any appliqué by hand. Still to this day, the machine I have, and love, doesn’t have a button hole stitch. (That’s what we call it) So, I haven’t appliquéd much at all for the longest time. I was definitely excited to try Flexi Fuse after quilting for Laser Cut Quilts. It was fun and easy to appliqué, finally!! Now, what should I appliqué next?
I decided to use my On Point©️ digital quilting design, to quilt it. This design is great!! If you offset it at 50%, no lines will stitch over any other lines. I stitched it at a height of 4”, which makes the squares 1/2” big. It’s available in my shop or at Urban Elementz. I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and a scrap of wool batting for that extra pop.
I found the perfect match to the bottom rust color of acorns, for the backing. It’s from Minick & Simpson for Moda, called Northport Prints. Also, I used a Moda Muslim Mates white on white dash print for the front.
Next up, this gorgeous pillow made by Sherry. It was one of the pillow of the month kits that My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe had a couple months ago. It’s my understanding that you can get all the patterns of their pillows from this past year. One of which…is the gnome pillows I share below. Check with them for more info.
I wanted to keep this classy. The diamond cross hatch is such a fun background texture. I quilted 3/4” vertical lines, and then 3/4” diagonal lines. I used an Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple. By the way, she has a limited addition Christmas quilt block ornament. I just ordered mine. I also used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and if I remember right, Sherry had a batting scrap…I think it was an 8020.
The top petals are dimensional, and so I left them and the flower center un-quilted, but those appliquéd petals needed a little detail, and I thought this fun swirly feather would be great!! I love how it turned out.
Next up…I told Sherry in August I was already starting to fill up for fall. She told me she wanted to make some Christmas gifts. She’s the sweetest, and her family is soooo lucky!! I actually sewed all the backings together, and was about to quilt 12. I sewed the backs together so it was one lonnnnng backing. This is great for small things, like pillows. I pin the backing on, cut all the batting, and then baste down the first pillow. I quilt, roll, and repeat until complete. Haha!! Really it’s so slick! Saves time, and my back.
This Gnome pillow is one of My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe’s monthly pillow patterns.
I showed this pillow quilting once before, but because it’s such a fun one, I’m sharing with you again. I freehand quilted over lapping circles in the background, lines in the hat and body…using Linda’s Edge rulers, and a fun texture in the Gnome’s beard. In the sashed border, I quilted ribbon candy…diagonal lines…and a twist. I used Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread (which is a darker cream) and 8020 cotton poly king size batting. I actually got 6 pillows out of one width of the 120” wide batt, so it honestly was much batting. It’s always great to check and see if a king size batt will fit your clients needs better, than the traditional 96” queen batting. I have both on hand, on the roll.
Here are a couple of beard options. Love them both.
Next up, wow, huh!!! This amazing quilt was made by Loranne. The pattern is by Kathy Doughty of Material Obsessions in Sydney, Australia. The pattern is "Fractured" from her book Making Quilts. Such a striking quilt!
I used a gold’ish tan color for the thread from A&E, 30 tex Perma Core. I also used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles. I actually recently joined with a few other quilters and wrote a great post on batting, check it out and get info there for my batting supplier.
She made this quilt for one very lucky niece.
Loranne chose Patricia Ritter and my Kindling©️ quilting design. It’s available at Urban Elementz. This is such a fun quilting texture, which has actually been a very vertical design. I just used it on a Harley Davidson t-shirt quilt.
I love this angle of quilts, the texture shows up so well. I know it’s hard to see sometimes in pictures, especially when the thread blends so well.
Okay, how fun is the fabric and quilting texture on this baby quilt, made by Shelley?!?!?!!!!
I used Malachite by Patricia Ritter and it’s available at Urban Elementz.
I used a white or antique cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.
These circles are machine appliquéd down, and very nicely show off the fabrics. Okay, that minky backing with the Malachite design, is just glorious!
Barbara made this little table topper for her daughter, such cute patchwork pumpkins. The pattern is Scrappy Pumpkins hanging, by Village Dry Goods in Brigham City Utah.
I used the Wisteria quilting design by Patricia Ritter. I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and an 8020 cotton/poly batt.
Wisteria is available at Urban Elementz. It’s one of my favorite little leaf designs.
Okay, I have to explain…a handful of my clients get together once a week and sew. These next two quilt are looking the exact same, but there are differences, so that why I’m sharing both. Plus, I have another one folded and hanging on my belly bar to quilt this weekend.
This quilt was made by Joleen. I showed her a few quilting options and she decided on a leaf design that I love. First this quilt is called Pumpkins by Cluck Cluck Sew.
The quilting design is called Grapevine by Denise Schillinger Urban Elementz , another favorite leaf design. I typically quilt this horizontally across the quilt, but this one has minky on the backing, and because of the direction minky must be pinned on, this design had to be quilted vertical on the quilt. Vertical by quilting the length of the quilt, not the width like I typically do.
I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.
I do want to point out that adorable mini diamond background fabric. It has purple, orange, red, yellow and maybe black…or maybe it’s a really dark purple. Anyways…it’s what this group of friends used for the background on all their pumpkin quilts. It’s a Riley Blake fabric by Dani Mogstad in her fabBOOlous line.
This is Maria’s quilt. She didn’t put horizontal sashing strips on hers, which made them closer. She also wanted a different quilting design. One of the reasons I wanted to share both quilts, even thought they are pretty close…it’s nicely to see what different designs look like on the same quilt pattern.
I love this Soho design by Sarah Ann Myers, it’s been a favorite of mine for a long time and it’s available at Urban Elementz . I hope you enjoy seeing the quilting options.
I used the same Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and 8020 cotton poly blend batting.
Okay…so this is the same pattern, made with a Moda Cross Weave fabric for the background. Sandy and her friend Marsha made them together, and because I’ve shared this quilt recently…made by Sherry, I just wanted to show a 3rd option of quilting.
They loved the Sweet Orange Peel©️ design, that I quilted on Sherry’s, and requested it on theirs. This design is such a fun vertical design, that goes so well on such a variety of quilts or runners. It’s only available in my shop.
I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly.
Here is another gnome pillow, this one made by Barbara. Quilted the same, but it is more narrow than the last gnome pillows I showed you.
I love how simple quilting can make things pop!! I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and I think Barbara brought a batting scrap, 8020.
This beard is one of my favorites that I’ve quilted, and then I also used Linda from The Quilted Pineapple’s Edge rulers to quilt all the lines.
Next up, Sherry made quite of few of these Ginger’s Kitchen bench pillows for family!! Pattern is by Kimberbell Designs. Kits are available at My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe.
It’s all about texture and repeating it throughout the pillow, when it comes to custom quilting.
I used white 30 Tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020.
Lines, stippling, overlapping circles, swirls, stars, ribbon candy, and petals…
I used Linda’s Edge rulers for all the lines.
I used my 3” Circle2™ ruler to quilt these petals and freehand quilted the twist inside. My Circle2™ rulers come in a set of 6, and have two circles per ruler. They range in size from 2”-13”. For more info, check them out here: https://www.quiltingit.com/blog/2018/10/10/introducing-my-circle2-longarm-circle-ruler-set?rq=Circle2
This pillow pairs nicely with Kimberbell Design’s “We Whisk you a Merry Christmas” quilt.
How lovely is this runner? Made by Kate. She took some parts of the Witches Night Out blocks by Kimberly from Its Sew Emma, and made a runner and some table toppers.
First up, the pumpkins. She used Fig Tree & Co’s “All Hallows Eve” fabric. She also used that line of fabrics and pattern, for the hats pictured below.
I used Pumpkin Fest petite by Patricia E. Ritter and Melonie J. Caldwell and it’s available at Urban Elementz . It’s such a fun design!!
I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and 8020 cotton poly batting for both the pumpkins, and the hats.
These would be such cute pillows, but Kate’s daughters wanted table toppers instead. Which is great, too!
I used Haunted Web by Apricot Moon Designs And it’s available at Urban Elementz . I love right where the webs hit on the hat.
Next up, Laurie and her friend Ineke, made these beautiful runners…from a quilt pattern, just like Kate did.
Quilt pattern is called Goodness Grows by Linzee McCray from Clark Street Quilts. They made a table runner, and turned some of the flowers, so they will alternate. Then they added a cute pieced border.
I used my Sweet Orange Peel©️ quilting design to quilt it. It’s only available in my shop. Which added a little bit of a lattice look to it.
I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Laurie brought a 8020 batting scrap.
Next, this amazing quilt made by Michonne from @silverlinedstitches • The quilt pattern is by Fat Quarter Shop and is the Designer Mystery block of the month for 2018.
So many fun different blocks!! Michonne used Fig Tree fabrics.
I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, if I remember right, if not the Antique Cream color. I also used a 8020 batting.
Michonne loves this Wishbone quilting design by Jess Zeigler from Threaded quilting, and I was so happy I could buy it and use it right away. I need to go get her Eye Appeal design, too! I quilted it at a 4.41 height.
That texture is just fabulous!!
Next up, this sweet quilt was made by Monica from @sewnbylovey • the pattern is by Villa Rosa Designs and is called Brides Dream.
Monica made this for her parents anniversary!!
Monica and her sister loved Patricia Ritter and by Haven©️ design, especially because their parents relationship has been a haven. It’s available Urban Elementz • Such a fun swirly vine!!
I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Monica sent a batting. I’m thinking it was an 8020.
I love these pictures where the quilt is folded over itself.
Next up, this one makes me dream of warm summer days and the 4th of July. Made by Chris, pattern by Kimberbell Designs. My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe has some machine embroidery classes on how to make some of Kim’s patterns. They may even have done this in a kit.
I quilted it custom. Diagonal lines, pin stripes, and overlapping circles. Quilting a pillow gives it extra pop, after the pillow form is in.
I used an 8020 cotton poly batting and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.
Chris also made this tree skirt. After she saw it quilted, she said she wanted to leave it together and use it as a table runner. Otherwise, she would cut into the center and a line through one of the big on point blocks.
The pattern is by Deonn Stott and is called Star Medallion Tree Skirt.
The quilting on this is all about feathers. I did some freehand feather swirls in the star, using white thread in white and red thread in the red fabrics. 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, and 8020 cotton poly batting.
I used a couple of my Circle2™ machine quilting circle rulers for the feathered swirl wreaths in the square blocks.
I used the 10” Circle2™ ruler in the bigger squares. I quilt a majority of the circle, using the ruler, then I turned it, lining up the quilting 1/4” from the ruler, and then finish quilting the circle. Then I quilted the feathers and swirls around. I know it may be hard to see, it’s because I used red thread, which was the perfect choice. White thread would have competed with the design on the fabric.
Adding swirls to a feather, adds variety and helps fill along the edges of the square.
I used the 6” Circle2™ ruler for smaller square, doing the same quilting as I mentioned above.
These rulers are so vertical. I use them for all different types of curvy shapes. I started a hashtag on Instagram #circle2rulers • you should go check it out. Some amazing quilting has been done with these rulers, and that’s the best place to check it out.
This next quilt was made using the AccuQuilt. Chris appliquéd the family’s hand prints to give to her grandkids other grandparents, so they would feel loved. That’s how sweet Chris is!!
I love the Bonnie and Camille fabrics she used, so bright and happy!!
Also, such a fun variety of quilt blocks. I think the layout was all Chris’ idea, and the blocks were cut using the AccuQuilt machine.
Chris requested Patricia Ritter and my Be Mine quilting design, which is available at Urban Elementz . It’s a sweet finishing touch to this quilt.
This background fabric has metallic dots on it. I used Antique Cream A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 to quilt it.
Next up, this is an out of print panel from JoAnn’s, that Wendy added borders to.
We decided on Patricia Ritter and my Twirl©️ quilting design. It’s available at Urban Elementz . I think it looks great. A great quilting design can add so much to a simple panel like this one. I used Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020.
Next up…this fun Hawaiian shirt quilt is called Sunshine, and it’s a free pattern on the Moda Cutting Table website. Made by Kathy.
How fun!! Huh!!!
I used Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batting.
Kathy fused the edges of the collar down, because they are dimensional, which made it easier for me to quilt.
That quilty goodness is such a perfect pairing with this quilt pattern.
We decided on Patricia Ritter and my Cedar©️ quilting design. It’s available at Urban Elementz . When I initially designed this design, I was dreaming and hoping it would end up on a quilt like this. I love the tropical feel of it.
Some close ups for good measure, and because I just love how it turned out.
Next, this lovely quilt made by Barbara. It’s a block of the week that Village Dry Goods did this summer.
The centers of these blocks are so tiny. Barbara did a best job making it.
I used Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batting.
So for the quilting we went simple and lovely.
The quilting design is called North Winds by Hermione Agee and it’s available at Urban Elementz. I quilted it out at 5.3 height, which was a perfect size. It’s a swirl with a hook on the end of it.
Quilting close up.
Next, Barbara finished up her yearly table runners by making this cute runner. The quilt is by The Pattern Basket, and is called Hocus Pocus.
I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.
I used Grapevine from Denise Schillinger. It’s available at Urban Elementz . I quilted it smaller than I usually do, because it’s a runner. This is definitely one of my favorite leaf designs.
Next, we have this fun flag quilt made by Laurie. The pattern is by Maker Valley (who has the funnest quilting t-shirts…they are seriously so comfy) and it’s called Yankee Doddle Dandy - USA flag quilt. While you’re in her shop, look at all the other fun stuff she has.
I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020.
I used Good Vibrations by Patricia Ritter, which is available at Urban Elementz . I set the height or spacing for this design at 3/4” which is perfect, not too close, but the perfect amount of quilting.
This quilt is for a special little one, who should be here any day. I hope her momma loves it. I had leftover half square triangles from a chevron quilt I made years ago, and so I decided to lay them out randomly and sew it together. No pattern needed.
I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 king size batting, so I could quilt two baby quilts.
I want to point out, in case you haven’t noticed, I use a ton of cream and white thread. Neutral colors just blend so well on such a variety of quilts. I believe the quilting should enhance and compliment the quilt, not be too bold to take away from the quilt itself. Matter of personal preference, I know.
I used Circle Play by Patricia Ritter from Urban Elementz to quilt it. It’s my favorite circle design that I’ve used. Which goes with all of the dots in the fabrics.
Okay, you need an easy yet fun modern baby quilt??? Take a few extra quilt blocks, and sew them into a strip, add fabric to both sides and there you go!!
The blocks in this baby quilt were leftovers from a Pow Wow quilt I made awhile ago. The pattern is by Cluck Cluck Sew.
Lately the hardest part for me in the whole quilt making process has been picking out backing fabric. The right color and print, that matches the whole quilt style. Not easy. You’ll have to scroll down to the last picture of this quilt. It’s a fun geometric aqua fabric from Joel Dewberry’s Birch Farm line.
I was actually going to quilt my Fort©️ design, but decided Squared©️ would be a better fit. They are both available in my shop and over at Urban Elementz .
I get my fabrics from Sisters and Quilters. The blocks are older fabrics from awhile back, but they have an incredible selection.
Close ups on that fun Squared©️ design. If you’re a quilter, you may want to invest in this one. This and my Sweet Orange Peel©️ design are some of my most requested designs from clients. To check them out or see the other quilting designs I offer, go to my shop.
You made it to the last quilt in this post, thanks for bearing with me as I share all the quilts and runners in one post. I’ve been busy quilting. Some quilts I haven’t shared because they are duplicates or similar to ones I’ve already blogged.
Sherry made this super cute quilt!! The pattern is called Winter Pines by Missouri Star.
I love the fun patterns and colors on the trunks!!
I used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly and Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.
It’s really starting to feel like the holidays are coming with this quilt and hallmark Christmas movies playing. I do actually have a FUN quilty Christmas giveaway soon on my Instagram. Head over there and watch for it in the next couple of days. @leishakaye
I gave Sherry a few different quilting options and she chose Patricia Ritter and my Frost©️ design. I was excited, it’s such a fun one to quilt. It’s available at Urban Elementz .
A close up along the borders.
And, how about that plaid backing. Seriously, soooo cute!
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing some of the fun things I’ve been quilting!! I have more quilts from now until Christmas to quilt, and I’ll share those when I’m finished quilting for the year. Thanks for coming to my little quilty place. I appreciate your support!! Happy holidays to each one of you.
Also…Did you hear that I added a Machine Quilting 101 section to my website. This isn’t something you’ll subscribe to, you’ll just have to head over there and check it out. I will try and share here, when new content is added. In my original post I share the things we’ll cover over there. If there is something you’d like more info on, that isn’t already listed, let me know. On Monday a few longarm quilting friends, (the lovely ladies pictured above), joined me in a discussion all about batting. From our favorite brands, to how much to cut, and even using two batting’s in one quilt. These posts will be for anyone who wants to learn more about quilting…not just longarm quilters. Go check it out!! I know I learned some things, and I’m excited to try some new batting’s.
Hope you’re able to squeeze in some holiday sewing. -leisha
